The Projects

The book starts off with "A Spiral in the Dreamer'z Dojo," a story told through illustrations, based on my experience with mental health struggles due to burn out and my fear of the future during uncertain times in the world. 23 original digital drawings come together to tell my story, in hopes of connecting with souls who are living a similar experience.

Following "A Spiral in the Dreamer'z Dojo," is "The Future Self Project." This project is a series of black and white illustrations based off of responses to a question I posted online, “What would you like to ask your future self?” Each featured illustration is an example of how prevelant mental health struggles are amongst Generation Z.

Exhibition Events

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, three events took place in the gallery space in collaboration with local businesses. Each event was run with the intentions of bringing the community together to have conversations about topics presented in the artwork and to have fun!

Opening Reception

The first event was the opening reception on March 22, 2022. Collaborators included the State College Downtown Improvement District, Mellow Honey Band, and Oli's mocktails. The Downtown Improvement District organized tables with art supplies for visitors to contribute to a mural project in the area. For musical entertainment, there was an open-mic which was followed up by a local band, Mellow Honey.

A Party in the Dreamer'z Dojo

The second event was "A Party in the Dreamer'z Dojo" on April 1, 2022. Collaborators included a DJ set by Gorinto Productions, Scotch Pours, and Oli's mocktails. Scotch Pours organized an activity where visitors could experience acrylic paint pouring on vinyl records. The color palette for each jar of paint was based off of the color palette of the exhibition.

Doodle and Journal Workshop

The third and last event was a drawing and journaling workshop on April 16, 2022. The event took place in the section of the gallery displaying "The Future Self Project" mural. Art supplies, creative books, and coffee were provided for guests to utilize during the workshop.

I walked the group through questions about their daily stressors, the effects that productivity standards have on their lives, how they currently cope with these struggles, as well as how they plan to cope moving forward. Guests were welcome to reflect on each prompt through drawing or writing.

My goal with this workshop was to create a safe, non-judgement space where visitors could reflect on how topics posed in the exhibition relate to their own lives. Having conversations about our own struggles often lead to discovering that others are feeling the same way. This realization can provide a life changing sense of comfort and community.
